As an open-admission shelter, Frederick County Animal Control facility accepts owned animals relinquished by county residents as well as those trapped, found stray, running-at-large, and/or impounded within Frederick County, including wildlife.
At Frederick County Animal Control, our mission includes preventing cruelty, abuse, and neglect of animals in Frederick County by enforcing laws and ordinances; sheltering homeless animals and placing them in safe and loving homes. We reunite stray animals with their owners; and educate the public on all animal issues to foster a more aware and caring community. The major personnel components of our shelter include Kennel Staff who provides basic and medical care to animals.
Officers and Supervisor who handle complaints and perform investigations on situations ranging from barking and general nuisance to felony/misdemeanor cases and animal bites, Administrative staff, and Volunteers. As part of our adoption process, all dogs, cats, and rabbits are spayed or neutered prior to adoption. Pursuant to local ordinance, all dogs and cats adopted, rescued, or returned to owner are implanted with a microchip to provide lifelong identification in the event the animal is separated from its owner.
Public health and safety are priorities for our Division. Additional services we provide to the public include a Pet Food Bank for senior citizens or pet owners experiencing financial hardship. We provide low-cost pet microchip clinics to the public every Wednesday between the hours of 10:00am and 3:00pm on a walk-in basis.
Another important component of our services is education. We offer tours and presentations to schools, community groups, and businesses to make them aware of how we help the community, dispel myths, and to gain insight into community needs. We also maintain a list of pet friendly services to assist pet owners.
