Researching Non-conflicting Fish Species
Before selecting new fish, it’s crucial to understand species compatibility. Some fish may not get along well. Case in point: aggressive fish can harm peaceful varieties. Here are some quick tips for researching:
- Look up the temperament of potential fish.
- Check ideal tank conditions, like temperature and pH.
- Research their adult size to avoid overcrowding.
Selecting Healthy Fish
Selecting healthy fish is another important step. Here’s how to ensure you choose the best:
- Inspect fish for clear eyes and active swimming.
- Ask about the fish’s diet and feeding habits.
- Look for signs of disease, like unusual spots or fin damage.
- Even if they appear healthy, always quarantine new arrivals in a separate tank for at least 2 weeks to monitor for signs of initially unseen illness.
Actual Introduction Procedure
- Adjust for Temperature- Float the sealed bag with the new fish at the top of your aquarium for 20 minutes.
- Slowly add a cup of water from the aquarium into the bag to mix the two sources and wait 15 minutes. Add more water from the take to the bag and wait another 10 minutes to equalize the water chemistry.
- Without adding the water from the bag, safely transfer the fish to your tank.
